Edmond Animal Shelter seeks public’s help to get dog beds

Human friends of canines are making a public appeal for more dog beds at the Edmond Animal Shelter.

Edmond Police Maj. Theresa Pfeiffer and a shelter official are working with the nonprofit Paws for Life organization to make sure all the dogs have a cozy and warm place to rest.

“We’d like to think that dogs can get comfortable in a bed and that can give them a feeling of what it will be like to be in a forever home,” Pfeiffer said.

The need for the beds has arisen, Pfeiffer said, because of wear and tear on existing beds.

Mary Robertson, of Paws for Life, said one kind of bed is preferable for the shelter.

“We have found Marchioro Perla Pet Beds to be the most suitable,” Robertson said.

Those are generally in the $30 range. Pfeiffer said dogs prefer the igloo-like structure of the Marchioro Perla bed, and they’re easier to disinfect.

Robertson said people who don’t want to buy a bed and deliver it to the shelter but would still like to help can send a check to Paws for Life at P.O. Box 3211, Edmond, OK 73083.

Pfeiffer said 40 of the beds are needed. While the shelter does maintain proper heat during the colder months, she said the beds gave additional comfort and warmth for dogs who might otherwise be on the floor.

Pfeiffer said she is grateful to the support her shelter receives from Paws for Life.

“They are just an incredible organization that helps so much,” she said.

Robertson is confident the public will respond. The group’s mission is to help get homeless animals adopted.

“Our community has always responded to needs at the shelter,” Robertson said.

Pfeiffer said volunteers also work at the shelter, and people who want to help can fill out a form online at the city of Edmond webpage or go by the shelter at 2424 Old Timbers Drive.

“We also need people to walk the dogs on one of the trails near the shelter,” she said.
