Harding festival seeks to spark attention for artists

- BY LINDA LIGHTNER For The Oklahoman Linda Lightner is director of admissions and community development for Harding Fine Arts Academy.

“Igniting the Spark” is the theme for the free Ignite Arts Festival 2017, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 4 at Harding Fine Arts Academy, 3333 N Shartel Ave.

Harding Fine Arts Academy is a public charter high school.

The Ignite Arts Festival is a gathering of student and professional visual, musical and performing artists featuring familyfriendly works in various media and styles, along with food booths. It is held in conjunction with the Art Spark Youth Art Competition, a contest for students from elementary and middle schools such as Nichols Hills Elementary and Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School. Art Spark contestant work will be on display during the Ignite festival, as will the works of Harding students, including painting, photography and illustrations.

Harding students who will perform throughout the day include the martial arts team, orchestra, band, student guitarists and pianists, dancers and the show choir.

Food court proceeds will benefit student clubs and organizations. “This event is a large community gathering, so any artists will gain exposure by participating,” said Preston Pettigrew, art teacher and event organizer. “More importantly, adult artists have an opportunity to validate and encourage young up-and-coming artists by exhibiting side by side with them in an arts festival atmosphere.”

Artists who want to display their work can contact Pettigrew at 702-4322. The school will retain a 15 percent commission on sales. Submissions will be considered until Monday.

Proceeds benefit visual and performing arts programs at Harding.
