Dove Science Academy bests Charity Week goal

It’s not every day a human-size Etch-ASketch roams the halls of Dove Public Charter Schools. But that’s exactly what could be found when high school student Lesly Morales participated in Charity Week by dressing as her favorite “Toy Story” character and reminding the community that it has a friend in Dove Science Academy OKC.

During the recent sevenday fundraiser, students paid $1 to dress according to the day’s theme and an additional $1 to wear jeans instead of uniform slacks.

Funds raised benefit Oklahoma Disabled American Veterans, Beautiful Dream Society, The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-Oklahoma chapter, Central Oklahoma Humane Society, United Way of Central Oklahoma and Aspiring Americans.

“The generosity of the students means to so much to those we serve here at The Salvation Army Chesapeake Energy Center of Hope. Daily we see individuals come to us in need of food, shelter and utility assistance. Because of Dove Science Academy’s gift, we are able to help supply a family of four with three weeks of groceries,” said Traci Jenkins, director of development.

“It’s simple. Charities give to others, so we should give to them,” said Natalie Haro, a seventh-grader.

“We are a part of the community, so we support the community. With fundraising like this, we work as a big team. This is the only way we know,” Principal Yunus Bicici said.

The school reached its goal to raise more than $1,000 — bringing in a total of $1,643. And as a reward for students’ efforts, eight teachers took a pie to the face during a riotous celebratory assembly. “Mrs. Wickliff really encouraged us to participate. And it was fun,” said Guillermo Hernendez, a senior. “I mean she gives me homework, so she gets a pie in the face. But really, I know someone who lost a family member while they were in service, so raising money for the Disabled Veterans was important to me.”
