Texas Rangers to investigate Baylor handling of assaults

-

Texas’ top law enforcement agency has opened a preliminary investigation into Baylor University and how it handled reports of sexual and physical assault over several years.

The Texas Rangers confirmed Wednesday they are working with the McLennan County prosecutor’s office to “determine if further action is warranted.”

A group of state lawmakers had called Tuesday for the Rangers to investigate Baylor, which faces several federal lawsuits from women who say the school ignored or mishandled their reports of assault for years.

Baylor officials say an internal investigation found at least 17 women who reported being sexually assaulted by 19 football players in recent years, although one lawsuit puts the number at more than 50 women.

The statement from the Texas Rangers didn’t say if the agency was looking at specific cases or current or former school employees and students.

Former Heisman Trophy winner joins Crimson Tide

Alabama has hired Florida State Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke and his first assignment will be to help the Crimson Tide beat the Seminoles.

Weinke is joining Alabama’s football staff as an offensive analyst, according to a Wednesday report from The Tuscaloosa News.

Weinke assumes the position after two seasons as a quarterbacks coach with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams.

He previously served as Bradenton IMG Academy’s director of football for five years beforehand.

Weinke brings a wealth of experience and connections on the recruiting trail to Alabama, which has lost

Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian and former FSU quarterback

Clint Trickett from its offensive staff in recent weeks.

Gamecock QB to transfer

South Carolina quarterback Brandon McIlwain says he’s leaving the university.

McIlwain was considered a centerpiece prospect for coach Will Muschamp’s young program when he arrived on campus in January 2016.

But after falling behind quarterback Jake Bentley last season, McIlwain said on Twitter that he will transfer.
