Timed Event Championship begins at Lazy E Arena
GUTHRIE — The Timed Event Championship begins Friday at the Lazy E Arena.
Twenty of top timed-event cowboys in the country will compete in five disciplines — heading, heeling, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and steer roping — to determine who is the “Ironman of ProRodeo.”
“When you compete in so many different events, consistency is the biggest deal,” said Paul David Tierney, the reigning and two-time Timed Event champion from Oral, S.D.
Tierney is part of strong group of competitors that include other former Timed Event champions such as Trevor Brazile, Daniel Green, K.C. Jones, Kyle Lockett and Josh Peek.
“It’s such a tough event with all the different horses and the different events,” said Green, a two-time winner from Oakdale, Calif. “You have to be able to adjust to all the different scenarios and challenges that come with it.”
Only 12 cowboys have captured the Timed Event title in its 32-year history. Brazile has the most wins with seven.
Brazile just missed his eighth crown last year, losing to Tierney on the final steer. In the Timed Event Championship, the cowboys will duel on 25 head of cattle in five performances at the Lazy E Arena over the next three days. At stake is the $100,000 championship prize.
The action begins at noon Friday with the second round starting at 7:30 p.m. The cowboys compete at the same times on Saturday then the Timed Event concludes with a 1 p.m. performance on Sunday.
This year’s event includes the inaugural Jr. Ironman Championship, which will feature 10 top cowboys from the ages of 15 to 20.
The Jr. Ironman will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday with a 10 a.m. performance on Sunday.
