Cowboys free up salary cap space
The Dallas Cowboys restructured the contract of All-Pro linebacker Sean
Lee on Tuesday to free up a little more than $5 million in salary-cap space.
The restructure was expected considering the Cowboys had only about $3.2 million in cap space — less than every other team in the league — heading into the start of free agency at 2 p.m. Thursday, according to the NFL Players Association.
The Cowboys now have about $8.5 million in salary cap space to work with as free agency is set to begin Thursday. The Cowboys were able to get under the league’s $167 million salary cap by restructuring the contracts of All-Pro offensive linemen Tyron
Smith and Travis Frederick two weeks ago.
Lee, 30, is coming off of his best season with the Cowboys and is signed through 2019.
Despite the additional cap space, don’t expect the Cowboys to be very active in free agency this week. They have 18 unrestricted free agents of their own and the priority is to resign a few of those before
looking outside.

Gresham.
The former OU tight end from Ardmore started 14 of 16 games in 2016 for the Cardinals.
He had 37 receptions, 391 receiving yards and two touchdown catches in his second season with the team.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
NFL suspends Jets WR Marshall
The NFL has suspended New York Jets receiver Jalin
Marshall for the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.
The suspension of the second-year player from Ohio State was announced Tuesday. Earlier, the New York Daily News reported he tested positive for Adderall.
Greenway retires healthy
Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway is finished playing football, proud to be leaving the game “healthy and happy” and ready for retirement.
Greenway concluded his 11-year career with a farewell news conference at Vikings headquarters on Tuesday. He turned his time at the podium into a 25-minute thank-you to the people who influenced and supported him in football. Former teammates Jim
Kleinsasser and Ben Leber were among those in attendance.
Niners release Smith
The San Francisco 49ers released receiver Torrey
Smith on Tuesday, just two years after giving him a big free-agent contract.
Smith caught 53 passes for 930 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the 49ers.
He never became the deep threat that he had been with the Ravens when he helped Baltimore beat San Francisco in the Super Bowl following the 2012 season.
