Team capsules for first-round bracket in Tulsa
MIAMI (21-11, 10-8 ACC)
The Hurricanes will rely on senior guard Davon Reed, a third-team AllACC performer who leads Miami with 15 points per game. Reed is complemented by 6-foot-2 guard Ja’Quan Newton, who averages 13.4 points per game.
SMU (30-4, 17-1 AAC)
After transferring from Duke and sitting out last season, versatile forward Semi Ojeleye emerged as the face of consistency, scoring more than 10 points in the last 26 games and leading the Mustangs with 18.9 points per game.
MICHIGAN STATE (19-14, 10-8 Big 10)
Michigan State is in the NCAA Tournament for the 20th consecutive season under coach Tom Izzo. The Spartans made the field on the strength of freshman Miles Bridges, who led all Big Ten freshman in both scoring (16.6 points) and rebounding (8.1) per game.
BAYLOR (25-7, 11-6 Big 12)
A fairly short trip to Tulsa was Baylor’s reward for a season in which the Bears reached a No. 1 ranking and finished as a top-10 team. Junior forward Johnathan Motley (17.3 points, 9.9 rebounds) was as good as any player in the Big 12 and a driving force that could pay dividends in late March.
KANSAS (28-4, 16-12 Big 12)
Top-seeded Kansas will be wellrested heading into Friday’s NCAA Tournament game against Cal Davis.
The 13-time Big 12 champions have only played one game in the past 13 days and are among the nation’s favorites to win a national championship.
CALIFORNIA DAVIS (23-12, 11-5 Big West)
Guard Brynton Lemar and forward Chima Moneke were named All-Big West first-team this season, Lemar has scored 20-plus points in 10 games. Moneke had a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds) in the win over North Carolina Central.
NEW MEXICO STATE (28-5, 11-3 WAC)
New Mexico State’s young roster was not intimidated this season, as four players averaged double-digits. As the team’s lone senior, Ian Baker leads the way with 16.6 points per game.
SOUTHERN CAL (25-9, 10-8 Pac-12)
USC is a young team, with nine of its 14 players being freshmen or sophomores. Those underclassmen are accounting for 64.9 percent of the team’s minutes this season.
The only seniors are Charles Buggs, a fifth-year transfer from Minnesota, and Samer Dhillon, who is a walk-on, and there are only two scholarship juniors.
