North’s Young takes Gatorade Oklahoma Award

It’s no surprise that the postseason honors keep rolling in for Norman North senior point guard Trae Young.

On Monday, he was named the Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year for the second straight year. In fact, he’s the third straight two-time winner of the award, along with Owasso’s Shake Milton in 2014-15 and Douglass’ Stevie Clark in 2012-13.

Young, who has committed to Oklahoma, averaged 42.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists as a senior, leading the Timberwolves’ to one win away from the state tournament.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard has been named a McDonald’s All-American and is ranked in the top 20 nationally by virtually all recruiting services.

“Trae Young is so crafty with the ball it was very difficult containing him even with two players,” said Moore coach Gregg Hardin. “He has all the tools needed to be a great player at the next level. He’s by far the best player in the state and can contend with the top players in the nation.”

Winning the state award also makes Young eligible for the national Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year honor, to be announced later this month.

Mustang looking for boys basketball coach

With Robert Foreman returning to an administrative role as Mustang’s new athletic director, one of his first duties will be filling the spot he’s held since October as the Broncos’ boys basketball coach.

Foreman, who had previously been a varsity head coach at the Class 6A level, was serving as Mustang’s assistant principal but was picked to coach the team after former coach Terry

Long resigned at the beginning of October.

Earlier this month, he was approved by the school board to fill the vacated athletic director position.

Mustang won the Class 6A state championship in 2015 and reached the semifinals in 2016. This year’s Broncos finished 14-12, coming two wins short of the state tournament.
