Service scheduled for Smith

A memorial service for former State Fair Speedway great Steve Smith is scheduled 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Waterloo Church of the Nazarene, 457 W. Waterloo Road in Edmond.

Smith, who won a record-tying seven points championsh­ips at the now-defunct dirt track, died early Saturday morning. The 50-year-old from Edmond suffered a massive heart attack last Friday night while racing a sprint car at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker.

DeVoe promoted to Edmond swim coach

Heather DeVoe has been named Edmond Public Schools swim coach, DeVoe confirmed to The Oklahoman on Thursday. DeVoe succeeds Steve

Riggs, the only swim coach in each program’s history, who retired at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. Riggs coached the three Edmond schools for 41 seasons and won a combined 14 state championsh­ips with Edmond North or Edmond Memorial.

DeVoe was the site coach for Edmond Memorial this past season and teaches at Central Middle School. Edmond Memorial girls finished second at state in February, and junior Kellie

Fischer won the Class 6A girls 100-yard freestyle and backstroke championsh­ips.

“I’m excited about this opportunit­y,” DeVoe said. “I am looking forward to next season.”

Erin Devoe, Heather’s sister, will continue as Edmond North’s site coach.

Adam Collett will also continue as the Edmond Santa Fe site coach.

Oklahoma cowgirl takes early lead

Emily Miller was the barrel racing leader after Thursday’s opening day performanc­e at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla.

Miller and her horse, Pipe Wrench, clocked a time of 15.46 seconds.

The former Southweste­rn Oklahoma State University cowgirl works full-time as a dental hygienist and is the barrel racing champion of the Prairie Circuit which includes Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.

The rodeo began Thursday and continues through Sunday.
