King Marlin club offers learn-to-swim program

- BY LAURA CALLAHAN For The Oklahoman

Children 3 and older, teens and adults interested in learning proper swim technique and basic water safety at their own pace can take advantage of a new program offered by the King Marlin Swim Club.

The club’s Marlin Swim School offers the SwimAmerica program, a technique-oriented system that allows participants to learn the fundamentals of swimming on a timeline that works best for them.

Thirty-minute classes for each age group are offered two days a week — Monday/ Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday — at the Lighthouse Sports, Fitness and Health Center, 3333 W Hefner Road.

Sign up any time at www. marlinswimamerica.com or 845-5672.

The introductory rate is $99 per month, and thanks to a grant from the USA Swimming Foundation, scholarships are available for those who need financial assistance.

“We’re excited to bring SwimAmerica to the Oklahoma City area and give residents of all ages and financial situations the opportunity to learn to swim,” co-head coach Kathy Mendez said.

“Drowning is one of the top causes of unintentional injury death, and with 56,000 miles of shoreline along the state’s lakes and ponds, it’s important Oklahomans know how to swim.”

KMSC is a competitive USA Swimming team with locations at The Lighthouse in northwest Oklahoma City and Mitch Park YMCA in Edmond. The team was created in 2014 by Mendez, John Brown and Josh Everett.
