New OSU basketball coach Mike Boynton has promoted former Cowboys guard Keiton Page to director of player development

Mike Boynton retained a piece of Oklahoma State basketball history, while also plugging a vacancy in his coaching staff Wednesday, announcing Keiton Page as director of player development.

Page, who ranks among OSU’s all-time leading scorers, served various roles within the program since his career ended in 2012 and worked as the assistant director of player development last season under Brad Underwood. In his new role on Boynton’s first staff, Page is expected to play a large role in recruiting, as well as video scouting, game preparation and individual skill development, along with mentoring the team’s younger players.

“He’s going to be a guy who can tell the story about what it’s like to come to a place like this, work as hard as you can, have success and put yourself in position to have success in your life,” Boynton said. “He’s a walking, talking example of what we want our kids to feel like they can achieve here.

“He’s played at a really high level, played in high-level games. So he’s somebody who can tell the story that you can come here and achieve all your dreams. And also someone who can be a sounding board for our players, be an intermediary between our staff and our players during the season.”

Page arrived at OSU following a standout career at Pawnee High School. Seen as undersized for the Big 12, he quieted doubters by scoring 1,651 points as a Cowboy, ranking 10th on the school’s career scoring list.

His 299 career 3-pointers stood as a school record until Phil Forte passed him this past season. And he ranks No. 8 all-time at OSU with 108 career starts.

And Page did it all, as a Cowboy, not long ago, putting him in a role to relate with current and future players.

“What I bring to the table that is most important is that I was recently in their same shoes,” Page said. “I’ve been through it all. I’ve been an incoming freshman. I’ve been through the struggles that they’re going to go through. I’ve been through the lows and I’ve been through the highs.

“I can kind of guide those guys through what they’re going to go through.”

Said Boynton: “Through and through, he’s a Cowboy. And somebody that we would have really, really missed if we weren’t able to keep him around. He’s an unbelievable asset to our program and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
