Severe weather, tornadoes possible Friday evening

Depending on where you’re standing, this weekend’s weather could include rain, hail, tornadoes or snow.

Forecasters are predicting heavy rain and possible severe weather Friday night in Oklahoma, with colder temperatures moving into the state over the weekend.

Kevin Brown, a forecaster with the National Weather Service’s Norman office, said the most widespread threat Friday evening will be flooding as several rounds of rain make their way through the state. Some of those storms could bring hail up to tennis ball size, Brown said.

“Chances for tornadoes are on the low side right now, it appears, but they are not zero,” Brown said.

Forecasters are predicting up to 3 inches of rain Friday night and Saturday in central Oklahoma, with rainfall totals up to 8 inches in the eastern part of the state.

Best chances for flooding will likely be east of Oklahoma City, particularly in south-central and southeastern Oklahoma, Brown said.

Any rain that does fall in eastern Oklahoma will come on top of an inch or more of rain that’s fallen in the last two days.

Parts of far eastern Oklahoma, including Sallisaw and Stigler, have received about 3 inches of rain this week, according to the Oklahoma Mesonet weather network.

Chances for rain in central Oklahoma continue through Saturday night.

Sunday, central Oklahoma can expect cooler, dry weather, while wet snow is possible in northwestern Oklahoma and the Panhandle, Brown said.
