The 2016-2017 school year is winding down, and with that comes the spring state tournaments in several sports.

Sydnee Ramsey was frustrated early this spring.

Westmoore’s powerhitting senior was dealing with an ankle injury she suffered in travel ball. Her power was diminished.

But even less power from her is impressive.

“She hit off one foot and is still hitting .700,” Westmoore slowpitch softball coach Steve Schwarz said. “Not bad.”

Entering Wednesday’s Class 6A state tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, Ramsey might be the most feared hitter in the tournament.

A Kansas signee, she’s batting .743 with 19 home runs, 65 RBI and 52 run scored. She’s been walked 22 times. She spoke with The

Oklahoman about coming back from an injury, the state tournament and more.

Q: What was the challenge during that injury to get back on the field?

A: “It’s my senior year, and I didn’t want to be out longer than I had to. I didn’t want to be off the field.”

What was it like when you came back? You’ve had to be the designated hitter on one leg but still hit well.

“Not as good as I wanted, but I’ll take it. It was difficult. It was my back foot, so I didn’t have power coming from my legs. It was all arms, basically. I think I tried to make it work.”

You’ve gotten intentionally walked a lot this season. How do you mentally handle that?

“It’s definitely hard. People usually think you get used to it, but it never gets easier. You just have to have faith in your team. Everybody 1 through 10

can hit right now.”

You’re going into the state tournament ranked No. 3 and have been there every year of your high school career. What’s it going to take to get that elusive title?

“I think if we come off like we’ve been playing I think we’re as good as anybody in the state. I think it’s who gets hot and you have to hope you’re hot that day.”

What are you looking forward to the most at Kansas?

“I think it just being big, to get to play all of the top teams and stuff. I’m really excited for that.”
