Habitat’s Women Build to include Thunder Girls
A group of Thunder Girls, honorary Chairman Christine Berney, vice president of Oklahoma City Thunder community relations, and other female volunteers will frame a house for Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity’s 16th annual Women Build on Saturday.
The home is being built for homebuyer and single mother Heather Pirtle and her two children at 7308 Park Meadow in Oklahoma City’s Legacy Estates addition.
“All of our family and friends, as well as us, are excited to help build our home and to be able to say we did this as a family. The home will truly be built with love,” Pirtle said. “We can’t wait to have a safe and comfortable place we can call our own and peace knowing we will not have to move ever again.”
The Women Build “is not just lip service,” said Ann Felton Gilliland, chairman and CEO of Central Oklahoma Habitat. “Christine and the Thunder Girls are trading in hardwood for hard hats and hammers, not only to help end poverty housing, but also to spotlight the housing challenges women face right here in our community.”
The Thunder is proud to partner on the 2017 Women Build, Berney said.
“Central Oklahoma Habitat has been a great community partner over the years, and we’re happy to support them in their mission to help families build strength, stability and independence through housing,” she said.
The Thunder has been involved with Central Oklahoma Habitat since 2011 working on home builds during the holiday season that year, as well as the 2013 tornado aftermath in Moore. The organization also has donated game tickets and Rumble appearances in recent years to support Habitat families and volunteers.
Construction on the Women Build home will take eight weeks with a home dedication ceremony set for June 24. To volunteer, call 232-4828 or go to cohfh.org.
