EDMOND — There weren’t too many first-timer’s nerves for Brock

Polhill, who was making his state tournament debut on Monday.

The Edmond North junior shot 3-under-par 137 over 36 holes at the Golf Club of Edmond.

He trails only his veteran teammate Austin Eckroat — who is making his fourth state tournament start — in the individual standings heading into Tuesday’s final 18 holes.

Eckroat, a senior Oklahoma State signee, shot rounds of 66-68 for a 134 total and three-stroke lead on Polhill, with Sand Springs’ Carson

Griggs another shot back at 138. “I hit the ball really well off the tee and some good approach shots,” Polhill said. “I couldn’t get the putter going, but I hit the ball well.

“I was a little nervous, but I shook it off. I started making birdies, and I was playing good.”

Edmond North shot a tworound total of 566 for an 11-stroke lead over Owasso, with Edmond Memorial in third at 582.

Edmond North has won 11 of the last 12 titles, falling to Owasso in 2015.

Course switch shows in scores

As it has been the last several years, the Class 6A tournament was scheduled to be held at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, one of the most challenging courses in the state.

But with heavy rain in the Stillwater area over the last few weeks and several areas of the course under water, administrators at Karsten decided it would not be playable in time.

So the OSSAA began looking for a new location, ultimately landing at the Golf Club of Edmond, formerly known as Fairfax.

The less challenging layout produced lower scores. While under-par rounds were rare at Karsten the last few years, Monday saw eight rounds under par by six different players.

Afternoon turnarounds

Norman North’s Stinson Fuller had the most impressive turnaround between the first and second rounds. Fuller opened with a 94, but turned in a 76 in the afternoon round.

Three other players followed a round in the 90s with a round in the 70s: Tulsa Union’s Cole Bibler and Sapulpa’s Evan Linfoot, and Jenks’ Dudley McElhaney.
