Edmond to provide summer school programs
Edmond Public Schools will offer a variety of summer school programs for students in and out of the district.
“Summer Celebration,” a tuition-based program, offers handson classes for students in grades 1 through 6. Among the classes are “Wild about Science,” “Great TECHspectations” and “Strumming and Drumming.”
Classes meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Sunset Elementary school, 400 W Eighth St.
Session I will be June 5-15, and Session II will be June 19-29. Students can enroll in one or both sessions.
The cost is $160 for Edmond Public School students and $170 for out-of-district students. Enrollments are based on the grade the child will be entering next school year.

Two sessions of summer school will be offered for high school students who want to take an elective or retake a class they failed.
The first session will be June 5-29. The second session will be July 5-27. Classes will meet in the Santa Fe High School Freshman Academy from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
English, algebra, geometry, biology, and history and a variety of electives will be offered. Classes meet Monday through Thursday except the first week of July when classes will be Wednesday through Friday.
Tuition is $185 per course for in-district students and $215 per course for out-of-district students. For more information, call 726-6802 or 340-2235 after May 31.
The district will offer a middle school STEM camp from 9 a.m. to noon, June 19-22 at Cimarron Middle School. The cost is $80. For information, call 726-5501.
The Norman Chess Club concluded its season with a tournament at the Norman Library.
Eighteen club members in kindergarten through sixth grade participated in the May 13 tournament, which featured five rounds of 10-minute games.
Coaches Zile Cao and Ray Hoggard directed the Swiss-system tournament. Players competed for trophies in two sections.

Nearly 40 students participated in Norman Chess Club activities during the 2016-17 season, including weekly chess meetings. Players attended eight tournaments, including five Oklahoma Scholastic Chess Organization tournaments.
