Four Boy Scouts earn Eagle rank

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Four high school freshmen have earned the highest achievement in Boy Scouts, the rank of Eagle.

Carter Cole, Zane Hermen, Grant Smith and Hugo Williams worked for five years in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills to earn the performance-based achievement, according to a news release. They are members of Troop 4, affiliated with Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Each Eagle candidate conceived a project that would benefit the community, raised funds to underwrite the costs and managed a team of workers to complete the Eagle project.

Cole, the son of Steve and Janna Cole, attends Heritage Hall. His Eagle project was renovation of the chicken coop for Camp Shiloh, an inner city summer camp that serves 700 children ages 8 to 16.

Hermen is the son of Tamara and Jeff Hermen and attends Heritage Hall. For his Eagle project, he constructed, painted and installed 12 8-foot directional road signs for Camp Shiloh. With the remaining funds, he donated eight fishing rods to the camp fishing program.

Smith attends Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. He is the son of Kevin and Delana Smith. He designed and reconfigured a baseball diamond chain link fence to add dugouts for the home and visitor teams. The project was a donation for Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School.

Williams attends Heritage Hall and is the son of Kim and Noel Williams. He revamped the gardens at Camp Shiloh. He repaired the fence, gate and 12 garden boxes, and replaced the existing soil and mulch.

Rob Abernathy is Scoutmaster for Troop 4, and Dr. George Selby is committee chairman.
