FROM STAFF REPORTS

More than 100 uniformed Boy Scouts will strengthen their skills, serve as volunteers and camp on the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum grounds during the Chuck Wagon Festival, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Scouts will camp out Friday and Saturday nights. After the festival closes for the day on Saturday, Scouts and their troop leaders will camp on the museum grounds with meals and a dessert bake-off.

There will be campfire stories and singalongs with cowboy entertainer Jim Garling before they fall asleep in the great outdoors.

Throughout the weekend, Scouts will show families how to rope, leather stamp, decorate bandannas, make crafts and interact with the selfie stations.

“It’s a joy to have the Boy Scouts of America partner with the museum,” said Shannon Strain, museum visitor services manager and assistant Scoutmaster of Yukon Boy Scout Troop 389.

“The museum and Scouting shares many of the same principles such as hard work, cheerful service and helping others. I hope that because of these shared principles, the museum and Boy Scouts will have an enduring relationship for many festivals.”

Admission is $15 and free for members and children 12 and under; $5 off for Last Frontier Council Scouts in uniform and their families.

Family memberships start at $65 for a limited time only, which for many families is less expensive than purchasing festival tickets.

All crafts and activities are free with admission, except food from The Museum Grill and souvenirs from The Museum Store.
