Edmond seniors’ character essays win scholarships
EDMOND — The Character Council of Edmond, partnering with the Kiwanis Club, awarded $1,000 scholarships to three Edmond high school seniors.
The seniors were asked to write 400-450 word essays about how they exemplified specific character traits. The winners were chosen from 30 students who applied.
Kylie May, Edmond Memorial High School: May's essay focused on the traits of benevolence, gentleness and determination.
“Regardless of the challenge I am faced with, I proudly accept it with a smile on my face and take it on with the determination of a leader's traits of benevolence, gentleness, and determination," May wrote.
May is a bass player in the Edmond Memorial Symphonic Orchestra, takes concurrent classes at the University of Central Oklahoma and works part time at Main Event Entertainment. She volunteers at the Miracle League Program. She plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in meteorology.
Alison Duke, Edmond North High School: Duke focused on the character traits of determination, decisiveness and endurance.
“The quality of one’s character is the platform for the decisions throughout life,” Duke wrote.
Duke is in the Key Club, a member of the National Honor Society and PreMed Club. She served as junior and senior class vice president. Duke was senior captain of the Edmond North Pom Squad. She volunteers in the community and at her dance studio where she teaches younger children. She plans to attend Texas A&M University.
Cassidy Towe, Edmond Santa
Fe High School: In her essay, Towe wrote, "I have experienced lifelong lessons, learned the importance of good character and made some fantastic connections. Edmond’s endless amount of opportunities has sculpted my personality into what it is today.”
Cassidy focused on the character traits of compassion, determination, enthusiasm and joyfulness.Cassidy was a member of the National Honor Society and a Santa Fe drum major. She volunteers with a number of organizations, works as a child care provider and teaches flute to younger children.
She plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in biology.
