Terry ‘Buffalo’ Ware to perform in Norman

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Terry “Buffalo” Ware and The Shambles will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Lions Park as part of the Summer Breeze concert series.

Ware and his band perform a mix of instrumental surf/rock/rhythm and blues and Okie twang.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments to the free outdoor show at Symmes Street and Flood Avenue.

The Shambles includes Ware on guitar, Bob French on guitar, T.Z. Wright on keyboards, Marlin Butcher on bass, Michael McCarty on drums and Gregg Standridge on guitar. They perform many of Ware’s original compositions, as well as selected covers by The Ventures, The Shadows, Los Straitjackets, Booker T & the MGs and Frank Zappa.

Ware may be best known as guitarist for Ray Wylie Hubbard and the Cowboy Twinkies, a group that performed across the country from 1973 to 1979, including a stint at the Troubador in Los Angeles and on tour with Willie Nelson.

Since 2000, Ware has been a freelance guitarist backing such artists as Eliza Gilkyson, Wanda Jackson, Don Conoscenti and numerous others, including John Fullbright, with whom he appeared on the 2013 Grammy pretelecast and on David Letterman’s show. Ware has led the house band and served as master of ceremonies for the Hoot for Huntington’s at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival since 2003.

Greg Johnson, of the Blue Door, described Ware’s music as “rock and roll with jazz and country soul all over the groove.” Dan Forte, of Vintage Guitar Magazine, has written that “Oklahoman Ware’s instrumental projects invariably showcase his knack for hooky originals, sense of humor and interplay with a stable of topflight session players.”

Ware has released five CDs of original instrumental compositions and interpretation of songs by Harry Nilsson and Jimmy Webb. He and Standridge released an album of original vocal songs in late 2015.
