Blogger shares tips on honoring veterans
Genealogy blogger Amy Johnson Crow recently posted information on how to honor veterans in your family tree by applying to a lineage society that’s based on military service.
The best known society is Daughters of the American
Revolution, she said. Other societies, which are sponsored by state societies, include Society of Civil
War Families of Indiana as an example, or a local society such as Civil War Families
of Clinton County which provides information in Ohio.
The application process includes finding documentation for births, marriages, deaths and relationships that prove your relationship to a veteran. The applicant also has to prove that the ancestor meets certain criteria.
When applying to a society, be aware that many societies have a deadline of Dec. 31.
