Austin Eckroat put his name all over the Edmond North High record book
EDMOND — The Edmond North golf record book was basically a journal of Kevin Tway’s high school career.
Tway set records at Edmond North that it seemed unimaginable that anyone could catch — and some, like his single-season stroke average below 69, that still might never be broken.
But over the last four seasons, Austin Eckroat has stamped his name quite noticeably in that record book.
The Oklahoman’s AllCity Boys Golfer of the Year, Eckroat went into May’s Class 6A state tournament with 14 career victories, one shy of Tway’s record.
Along the way, Eckroat had surpassed the school records for top-10 finishes, as well as top-5s and top-3s.
And with his state tournament victory, he matched Tway’s 15 wins.
Perhaps more impressive, Eckroat has the school’s all-time low scoring average at 71.65. He had six wins and a 70-29 stroke average as a senior.
“Especially with the stuff Kevin has been doing professionally recently, it’s cool to think that I’m kind of following in his footsteps,” Eckroat said. “I’ve known who he was since I was a kid, because he would be out at Oak Tree, and then I was an OSU fan and I really followed him when he got to OSU.”
Up next, Eckroat, who is ranked in the top 15 nationally, will follow Tway’s path to Stillwater. He committed to the Cowboys as a freshman and signed in November. He has three former Edmond North teammates, Nick Heinen, Hayden Wood and Tyson Reeder, waiting for him to join them in August.
“I’ve been playing with golf those guys this summer, and I can’t wait to get up there with them,” Eckroat said. “It’s been a long time coming. I committed when I was a freshman, so I’ve been waiting for it.
“It took forever, but it was fun. I enjoyed high school.”
