Faith 7 Bowl set for Saturday, girls game added

The annual Faith 7 Basketball Bowl will include a girls game when it kicks off Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee.

The inaugural girls Faith 7 game will tip at 1:30 p.m., with the 52nd edition of the boys game at 3:30.

A charity event to benefit the Faith 7 Foundation, tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

OBCA adds five to Hall of Fame

Five new members were inducted into the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Associatio­n Hall of Fame last weekend.

The 2017 class of inductees included and Begley, Hankins and Murphey were enshrined posthumous­ly as the class was honored last Saturday in Ada.

Begley, who died in 2004, coached at Texhoma and Clinton high schools from 1958 through 1966. Following a year coaching in Texas, he returned to Oklahoma as head coach of Panhandle State for eight seasons.

In four seasons at Clinton, Begley won back-to-back state championsh­ips in 1964-65. He later served seven terms in the Oklahoma legislatur­e.

Hankins, who died in 2002, coached basketball, football, track, baseball and golf in Sand Springs for 16 years, ultimately retiring as director of athletics in 1988. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Associatio­n Hall of Fame in 1975.

He later played two years of profession­al basketball, including one year for the Boston Celtics.

Murphey, who died last year, spent 29 years coaching high school basketball at Felt and Texhoma. He won a state championsh­ip in 1994 at Texhoma and was runner-up in 1988.

Sprague spent 42 years in education, all in Tulsa, retiring in 2014. At Webster, Hale and Memorial, he was either head coach or assistant coach.

Van Zant was a head coach for 23 years during his 37-year tenure in education. He coached at Pond Creek and Pryor before starting the basketball program at Seminole Junior College in 1969.

Brese resigns from OSSAA board

Durant assistant principal and former football coach is retiring. That means his time with the OSSAA is done as well.

Brese’s resignatio­n was accepted Tuesday afternoon by the OSSAA board, which voted to bring back former board president for the upcoming school year in Brese’s place.

Brese’s term runs through 2021. An election next school year will take place to permanentl­y fill his position.
