Family Day returns to art museum

Children and families are invited to paint, paste and explore art as a free, public Family Day returns to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, 555 Elm Ave. Family Day is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Family Day will highlight contemporary art in the museum’s permanent collection, with a special focus on the recent gift from artist Ed Ruscha. Hands-on art activities include airbrush paintings inspired by Ruscha’s works as well as Op Art collages.

Ruscha, who was named an Oklahoma Cultural Treasure last year, gave several works to the museum, including 13 of his own works, a portfolio of images of tornadoes by Pop artist Joe Goode and works by sculptors George Herms and Jerry McMillan. Ruscha is credited by art critics and collectors as one of the most important living artists of the Pop art movement.

Besides Family Day, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art offers other programs for children and families. Art Adventures is held year-round at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays in the Dee Dee and Jon R. Stuart Classroom. At this weekly program, children experience art through books and related art projects. The program is made possible by support from the Kimball Foundation and is for children ages 3 to 5, accompanied by an adult.

Change in poets announced

p.m., is open to the public.

Everyone’s invited

To celebrate its anniversary, Norman Regional Moore has a special event planned that pays tribute to first responders such as the Moore Police Department, Moore Fire Department and EMSSTAT.

The hospital will host the free, community celebration from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the health care facility, 700 S Telephone Road. Each organization will have a recipient honored at 9:15 a.m. on the main stage. EMSSTAT also will be honored with the Lifeline Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association. This award recognizes emergency medical service organizations and their first response partners that implement quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks.

Other happenings at this family-friendly event include demonstrations of new medical technology including MRI Goggles; a bounce house obstacle course; children’s story time hosted by the Pioneer Library System; Touch-a-Truck with EMSSTAT, Moore Police and Moore Fire departments; and giveaways and prize drawings including a storm shelter donated by Atlas Storm Shelter.

Norman Regional Moore, a $32 million facility, was rebuilt after an EF5 tornado destroyed the former Moore Medical Center hospital on May 20, 2013. The year-old hospital houses a 24/7 emergency room, physician offices, diagnostic imaging, lab and therapy services.
