J.R. Martinez always showed a level of drive and determination unrivaled by many — from his time in school where he earned a spot on a highly prestigious high school’s football team to when he joined the U.S. Army, where his dreams were shattered on a road in Iraq by an antitank mine in 2003.

His tenacity and spirit guided him through a grueling recovery process after his face and more than a third of his body were burned in the incident, and led him to a new calling: sharing his experience with others. In August, he will share that story with physicians and medical professionals at EXPLORE Healthcare Summit.

Martinez will be one of the keynote speakers at this year’s EXPLORE Healthcare Summit presented by PLICO, held Aug. 10-11 at the Embassy Suites in Norman.

Today Martinez is an actor, “Dancing with the Stars” champion, and motivational speaker. He travels the country sharing his story, his lessons for overcoming challenges and trauma, and embracing hope and optimism.

EXPLORE organizers are excited to bring Martinez together with local medical professionals at the summit. The conference explores the challenges currently posed to health care, as well as strategies to construct solutions for the future. It is also a source of inspiration for the medical community.

“The key focus of EXPLORE is to provide a venue where medical professionals across the spectrum of health care can gather and collectively discuss how to improve the quality of health care delivery in Oklahoma,” said Matthew Moore, vice president of business development and marketing at PLICO, a MedPro Group/ Berkshire Hathaway company based in Oklahoma.

As in other states, Oklahoma medical professionals participate in state, regional and national associations that cater to and host events designed for specific disciplines within the health care profession.

“EXPLORE provides a venue for all these groups to meet together and dialogue with one another to better shape Oklahoma health care as a whole,” Moore said.

In addition to this opportunity to dialogue with one another, the conference will provide health care administrators with valuable insight and information regarding the future of health care and medicine. More than 60 exhibitors will provide a cutting-edge learning experience.

“At EXPLORE, many of the most relevant and timely topics related to clinical and legal risks, patient care and practice management will be discussed by both local and national experts,” Moore said.

Attendees also will be able to participate in breakout sessions during the conference to discuss and share ideas with one another.

“What makes EXPLORE compelling is this opportunity to network with peers from across the state of Oklahoma and discuss some of the most important issues facing Oklahoma’s health care providers and their patients,” Moore added.

The EXPLORE Healthcare Summit 2017 will feature other keynote speakers, including Derreck Kayongo, Global Soap Project founder and CEO of the Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Richard Moses, DO, JD, consultant for Medical Liability, Risk Management and Compliance. Other speakers, as well as workshops, will round out the event.

There will also be social and networking time at the summit, including the EXPO Opening Reception on Thursday at the conference center, as well as a cocktail party later that evening at the Devon Boathouse, located on the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City.

Attendees can receive continuing education credits for attending the summit.
