Police officer charged with domestic abuse

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

An 18-year veteran of the Oklahoma City Police Department has been charged with domestic abuse, accused of choking his wife who is also an Oklahoma City police officer.

Sgt. Donald Glynn Brewer, 44, was charged Thursday in Oklahoma County District Court with one count of domestic abuse by strangulation against his wife, officer Kristi Brewer, 28.

Kristi Brewer was originally arrested after police went to the couple’s apartmentin the 800 block of NW 10 about 11:30 p.m. June 6. Her husband had called police and told dispatchers she punched, scratched and kicked him and threw a straightening iron at his head after an argument in the bathroom, according to a court affidavit.

After further investigation, police said they were no longer pursuing criminal action against Kristi Brewer, and an arrest warrant was issued for Donald Brewer.

According to the arrest warrant, the couple were in their bathroom when Kristi Brewer saw a “kissy face” emoji on her husband’s phone, took it out of his hand and threw it in the bathtub. She told investigators her husband then tackled her into the bathtub and landed on top of her.

She said she couldn’t remember how she was able to get out of the bathtub but said she scratched and clawed at him while trying to get up.

Officers said Kristi Brewer’s pajama top had been torn and she had an abrasion to her knee, bruising to her back and had “redness to the right side of her throat more than two hours after the assault.” She told investigators she couldn’t remember if she had been choked after being slammed into the bathtub, and she thought she blacked out, according to the affidavit.

Officers saw scratches on Donald Brewer’s hands and chest and noted the injuries appeared to be “indicative of defensive injuries in strangulation cases.”

Kristi Brewer said her husband slammed her into the bathroom shelf and into the bathroom counter and was attempting to get his phone with his free hand. She said she grabbed a straightening iron and threw it at her husband, which angered him and he pushed her to the floor.

The couple’s 5-year-old daughter was in the next room and cried “Mommy hide” as Kristi Brewer crawled from the bathroom to the bedroom, according to the affidavit. Police said the couple’s daughter was interviewed and indicated Donald Brewer was the aggressor in the altercation.

Kristi Brewer filed for divorce on June 9, citing “irreconcilable incompatibility,” and stating she had been a victim of domestic violence during their nine-year relationship. The couple married in October, records show. The divorce is pending.

Oklahoma City police spokeswoman Megan Morgan said Donald Brewer remains on administrative leave with pay. Kristi Brewer has returned to duty.
