Sydney Sherrill has a lot of accolades, and now she can add Junior Women’s National Team member to them.

Sherrill, the Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year, is competing with the junior team at the World Cup of Softball at Hall of Fame Stadium this week. After graduating from Southmoore in May, Sherrill will attend Florida State in the fall to continue her softball career. She caught up with The

Oklahoman to talk about her World Cup experience.

Q: What’s it like to be a part of the Junior Women’s National

Team?

A: It’s a pretty spectacular feeling getting to represent our country. I don’t really have any words. It’s just amazing to play on this team and such a great opportunity.

What were you doing when you got the news that you were selected to the team?

I was actually waiting on the email. I was in my living room refreshing the email on my computer just waiting for it. I called my dad because he actually drove to Tampa, Florida, where we had the tryout. He was driving back because the same night as the tryout, OU played in New Orleans in a football game. He watched that and was driving back, and I called him.

What has the World Cup of softball been like so far?

It’s been awesome. The international teams are really good compared to everything else I’ve ever played. It’s really getting you ready for college ball because I haven’t played college ball yet, and it’s a good comparison to that.

Can you take things from going up against older players?

They’re super experienced. Some girls on the teams we are playing are like 30, and I’m 17. Just learning what they do because obviously they’ve been in a game for a long time.

What does softball being back in the Olympics for 2020 mean to you?

It’s huge. I think softball so deserves that. It’s such a fun sport to watch, and it definitely deserves to be in the 2020 Olympics. It’s growing. The game is growing so much. I know this World Cup is being broadcast on ESPN now, so it’s just growing. It’s really awesome.
