Midwest City resident Brett Bartek, a master's degree student in the Global Field Program offered through Miami University's Project Dragonfly, will travel to India this month to study the ecological, cultural and spiritual landscapes of the Western Ghats, where the fates of people, wildlife and deities meet in sacred groves and forest temples. Since the program began 13 years ago, Project Dragonfly's Earth Expeditions graduate courses have engaged more than 2,000 people in educational and scientific research at field sites in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas. Dragonfly is located in the department of biology at Miami University, a state university in Oxford, Ohio.
Jennifer Litchfield, a graduate of Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, is one of 10 people chosen from more than 5,500 applicants as a Samsung American Legion National Scholar. The scholars receive $20,000 scholarships for undergraduate expenses and the opportunity to be honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C. Administered by The American Legion since 1996, the scholarship fund is endowed by Samsung in appreciation of U.S. veterans, with emphasis on the families of those who served during the Korean War. Litchfield's grandfather is a veteran of the Korean War. With the help of the scholarship, she plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue degrees in economics and engineering.
