Jones’ Shaw is ranked No. 16

An early growth spurt and a penchant for making big plays has Jones wide receiver Sean Shaw Jr. getting several Division I offers. He’s also No. 16 in The Oklahoman’s Super 30 rankings.

JONES — Sean Shaw Jr. loves the high school image of his father.

Sean Shaw Sr. stood only around 5-foot-11 when he graduated from Jones High School, bound for Redlands Community College on a basketball scholarship.

“He was real short,” the younger Shaw said.

It didn’t take long for the elder Shaw to hit his growth spurt that runs in the large family. He was quickly 6-2 after a year. Then he reached 6-5, which led to a scholarship at John Brown University in Arkansas.

His son, however, found that height a lot sooner. Sean Shaw Jr. stands 6-6 and weighs 205 pounds.

It’s that size that separates a super-talented receiver for Jones, who is No. 16 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 rankings of the state’s top college football recruits with a handful of scholarship offers.

“I got the mismatched genes,” Shaw Jr. said. “I grew early.”

Shaw Jr. has been a towering presence for Jones since early in high school. As a freshman, he caught two touchdown passes. He was dynamic his sophomore season with 13 TDs and more than 1,100 receiving yards.

Last season, he caught 67 passes and seven TDs, but totaled just 869 yards as Jones won the Class 3A state title.

He dealt with numerous double and triple teams, which led to other receivers having breakout seasons. Still, he made spectacular catches when needed.

“Being that big presence that defensive backs have such a hard time working around,” Jones coach Dave Martin said. “He creates a lot of space underneath that it’s like a box-out in basketball. That’s the physical presence that he gives.”

Shaw said he will begin to narrow his recruiting options once the season starts.

He’s looking at five offers now — Iowa State, Kansas, SMU, North Texas and Wyoming — and has yet to name a favorite. He was planning to visit Iowa State recently, but that did not work out.

A product of a family deeply rooted in Jones, he said he’s hoping to find a similar feeling in college.

“Coach Martin and them have all been like family to me,” Shaw said. “I want to feel that same way going to another school.”
