Edmond Santa Fe’s Jo'Nah Johnson uses favorite move to lead the way

TULSA — Jo’Nah Johnson unleashed the crossover, stepped back and buried a 3-pointer.

She loves the move. Edmond Santa Fe’s star point guard has used it countless times. This time, it made the difference against some of the state’s top players.

Johnson’s patented 3-point shot late in the third quarter propelled West to a 73-64 victory in the annual Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large School girls basketball game Wednesday night at the Mabee Center.

“I don’t know where it came from, but it’s my favorite move,” Johnson said. “I know I can get a lot of separation.”

The Central Oklahoma signee scored eight points.

With 2:18 remaining in the third, that shot gave West a 47-42 advantage.

It was the second time she had made that shot. Each one drew gasps from the crowd.

“It’s just fun to have the crowd involved,” Johnson said.

East was led by Muskogee’s Trena Mims, who scored 21 points.

That duo had East in control early, but it was still unable to pull away from West.

Classen SAS’ Taylor Roberts — the state’s all-time 5-on5 scoring leader — scored 11 points for West.

Brown, Randall lead Small West rout

Chisholm’s Bailey Brown just wanted to make her last high school moment memorable.

She was all smiles following Small West’s 62-43 rout in which she and Alva’s Whitney Randall scored 13 points apiece.

“It was fun,” said Brown, who has signed with Northwestern Oklahoma State. “I just wanted to leave it all out there. Go hard.”

West jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first, holding East scoreless for nearly six minutes. East climbed back into the game by the end of three, but went on another drought that lasted just more than five minutes. West scored 12 in that span.

East was led by Dale’s Dani Manning and Asher’s Tarin Dubler with nine points apiece.

Seiling coach honored

The OCA named Seiling coach Brady Hamar the coach of the year after leading his team to a second straight state championship.

Other region honorees included Choctaw’s Ryan Maloney, Beggs’ Bunyan Johnson, Fort Gibson’s Jerry Walker, Sentinel’s Tatum Ridling, Pauls Valley’s

Gary Chaffin, Ada’s Christie Jennings and Tulsa East Central’s Samy Mack.
