TULSA — The journey from starting as freshmen to winning multiple state championships came to a close for a pair of Fort Cobb-Broxton teammates in March.

Cameron Hines and Greyden Steinmetz still had one more opportunity to play together on Thursday, doing so as members of the West squad in the small school All-State boys basketball game.

The Fort Cobb-Broxton duo helped the West beat the East 87-71 at the Mabee Center, with Hines scoring 11 points and Steinmetz contributing four.

One last chance to compete together was a fun experience for Hines, who heads to East Central University, and Steinmetz, who will attend Redlands Community College.

“It’s pretty sad. I’ve been going to basketball games with him since I was a little kid, sitting on the bench being the water boy,” Hines said. “Then play- ing and winning state with him, it’s going to be tough not being there with him through the season, but it’ll be fun going to college and playing a new level of ball.”

Hines and Steinmetz used to spend all morning in the gym during the summer and on weekends until they got hungry. The teammates would take a lunch break, then get back to work.

Those long days in the gym paid off with three consecutive state championships.

It was a special sight for Cameron’s father, Fort Cobb-Broxton coach Scott Hines, to watch one last time as a coach for the West squad on Thursday.

“It’s been really rewarding,” Scott Hines said. “Greyden, he stays at our house about half the time, and then Cameron is over there, because they just live a block from us. So it’s almost like he’s family.”

Fort Cobb-Broxton’s gym will certainly look different without the two 2,000-plus points career scorers and lifelong friends practicing in it every chance they had.

“It’s the end of an era,” Steinmetz said, “we had a heck of a run.”
