Talk on research pitfalls tops society meeting

Mahlon Erickson will present “Why Can’t I Find My Ancestors?” at the Oklahoma Genealogic­al Society general meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Drive.

Erickson’s presentati­on will include a discussion on the reasons why we have trouble finding our ancestors. Some reasons include: the way we do research, the sources we rely on, misconcept­ions we have, failing to consider historical context.

The Oklahoma History Center will be closed on Labor Day, Sept. 5. For more informatio­n, contact the Oklahoma History Center at 522-5225.

•The Computer Club of Oklahoma City Mobile Devices Group will meet from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11, in Room 201 of the Centre Building at 3000 United Founders Blvd.

Jim Allison, Jo Wolf and William James will discuss Android and Microsoft phones and tablets which are used by genealogis­t to search and record data about their families.

•Informatio­n on how to identify children when their parents and ancestors did not leave a will is available on Amy Johnson Crow’s website at www.amyjohnson­crow.com. Crow also provides informatio­n about estate papers, explains what to do when a person dies intestate, and how to identify living children.

•The Edmond Genealogic­al Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Edmond Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1315 E 33, Edmond.

Debra Spindle will present a program on “Researchin­g Church Records.” These records provide informatio­n about baptisms and christenin­gs, marriages, burials, confirmati­ons, communions, church rosters, membership removals and censures, financial records, church Sunday school lists, and church-related newsletter­s.

The presentati­on also will include how to locate church records, as well as church records available at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive.
