Norman galleries to host art walk
NORMAN — “Variations on Themes,” an exhibit of paintings by Jim Cobb, is on display through Aug. 27 at The Depot Gallery, 200 S Jones Ave. A reception for the artist will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, in conjunction with the monthly downtown art walk.
Classical and jazz guitar music will be provided by Tate Slatton from 7 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
“There are so many subjects from which to choose” Cobb said. “The human figure and portraits, as well as still lifes, are all from live models or a composition of flowers, vases, fruit, etc., which are posed to my preference and painted on the site. The dogs — and I went a little overboard with these canines — are obviously studio-produced from photographic images."
During his career as a painter, Cobb has had numerous one-man and group shows. He currently sells his work in the Reflection Gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
He, and wife Dail, divide their time between homes in Norman and Taos, New Mexico.
The art walk begins at 6 p.m., with most events continuing until 9 p.m. Some venues are open later, with after-hours music shows.
The Crucible, 110 E Tonhawa St., will have works by featured artists on display and offer tastings sponsored by Success Vodka and Prairie Artesian Ales.
D.M. Wealth, 201 E Main, will host artist Walt Disney, who took a few art classes while at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, which he thought would help him in the advertising field. It wasn't until he was well into his 50s that he developed an interest in painting and photography. He patterns his style after artists he saw while vacationing in New Mexico and the Caribbean. Frank Lawrence will provide music.
Artist Ashley Andexler will be featured at Bigfoot Creative, 315 E Main.
