It takes two to teach a tango class
MOORE — Argentine tango was a big hit at the Moore Library.
Jessica Conley, information services manager, said 37 people signed up to take the Friday lessons from Martha and David Wells, of TangoLife OKC.
"That's an outstanding number for an adult program," Conley said.
Daniel and Kara Outon, of Oklahoma City, taking their first tango class, wore broad smiles during warm-up exercises.
Josh Webb, of Noble, and Sara Hutchinson, of Oklahoma City, also were among the dancers. Hutchinson said she heard about it during her yoga class.
Jane Stanford, of Norman, and Bruce Maytubby, of Oklahoma City, said it was their first time to take a tango class.
The class also drew Avi and Marian Scherman. Avi Scherman, 79, a retired University of Oklahoma professor, said he was 12 when his mother taught him to tango in Romania.
"My father had two left legs," he said with a grin. He has lived in the United States since 1968.
Judith Chesser, of Mustang, and Fred Muehlhaeusler, of Oklahoma City, are veteran dancers, but this was their first time with Argentine tango.
"We usually square dance on Friday nights," Fred said. He said they also do ballroom dancing and other tango styles.
Argentine tango is social dancing, the instructors said. They said other tango forms are geared toward ballroom dancing with required patterns to earn competition points.
David Wells told the men to hold their partners tightly to guide them.
"This is good for relationships," he said.
The Wellses met while working at an Oklahoma City restaurant and have been married four years. They have been teaching their tango form for two years, David Wells said. Their classes are held at DZP Studio 3Sixty in Oklahoma City. For more information, call 4741251.
