Edmond society meeting to feature church records
For The Oklahoman
EDMOND — Debra Spindle will present a program on Researching Church Records during the Monday meeting of the Edmond Genealogical Society. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Edmond Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1315 E 33rd St.
Church records can be a valuable source of information for genealogists, as they contain data related to baptisms and christenings, marriages, burials, confirmations, communions, church rosters, membership removals and censures, financial records, Sunday school lists, and church-related newsletters. The information can vary according to the denomination, as well as the local church recorder, and not all information can be found online.
Spindle will share how to locate church records, as well as the church records available at the research center at the Oklahoma Historical Society. Examples from her own research will be included.
This is a return visit for Spindle. She works in the research library of the Oklahoma Historical Society, after a career in public libraries and teaching on the university level. She brings not only her extensive library research skills, but a personal ancestral background that includes early settlers in the Oklahoma Panhandle, and Mennonite immigrants to western Oklahoma.
The Edmond Genealogical Society meeting is open to the public, beginning with a social time at 6:15 p.m. Enter through the doors at the rear of the church building. The church offers plenty of parking and is fully handicapped accessible.
The society meets on the third Monday evening of the month, with speakers on subjects of interest to genealogists and historians. Membership is open to anyone interested in historical or genealogical research. For more information, go to www.rootsweb. ancestry.com/~okegs/
Next month’s presentation, on Sept. 18, will feature speaker Kenny Brown, professor emeritus from the University of Central Oklahoma Department of History and Geography, who will present “The Beginnings of Edmond: The Land Run and Beyond.”
Andrea Aven is first vice president and program chairman of the Edmond Genealogical Society.
