Siemian appears to have won QB job again
Even though coach Vance
Joseph isn’t saying it, the steady and solid Trevor
Siemian appears to have won the Denver Broncos’ quarterback derby for the second straight summer.
The seventh-rounder from Northwestern has outplayed former firstround pick Paxton Lynch of Memphis, whose flashes of athleticism and agility remain overshadowed by poor decisions and bad throws.
Although Joseph isn’t declaring a winner yet, Siemian has impressed a second set of coaches running a second offensive scheme, and Lynch, while he’s shown some progress, still doesn’t look ready to run a team.
Joseph declined to declare a winner in this QB competition following Denver’s 33-14 preseason win at San Francisco on Saturday night.
“I saw Paxton make some plays with his legs, which he should. He’s an athlete. And Trevor, he was solid. He was Trevor. He made good decisions. His ball placement was on point tonight. You know, he controlled the huddle, so I was pleased with Trevor,” Joseph said.
Joseph wouldn’t say if the decision was imminent, suggesting: “Again, the timeframe is not important. What’s important is that we get it right. So, it could be this week, it could be next week. But, we’re going to go back and watch the tape and see where we are.”
Redskins activate Reed from PUP list
The Washington Redskins have activated tight end Jordan Reed from the physically-unable-to-perform list.
Reed had been on the list since the start of training camp in late July because of an injury to the big toe on his left foot. The team announced the roster move Sunday.
With the toe injury lingering since last season, Reed has not practiced with teammates or played in a preseason game. He said Friday he expected to practice next week.
Matthews expects to be ready for season opener
Getting traded by the Philadelphia Eagles wasn’t easy on receiver Jordan
Matthews. Getting hurt in his first practice with the Buffalo Bills didn’t help.
Putting his emotions and frustrations aside, Matthews vowed Sunday that he’ll be healthy, ready and focused to play in the season opener against the New York Jets in three weeks.
“I want to go out there and prove myself to my teammates. I want them to know that I’m tough, and I want them to know that I’m not the type of guy that wants to miss practice and just be there for games.” Matthews said. “I’m extremely confident I will be ready to play for Week 1.”
Watkins adjusting to LA
Sammy Watkins got his first action for the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday since being acquired in a trade with Buffalo this preseason.
Watkins converted a third down on his first catch and added one more reception. Watkins nearly had a TD grab but could not come down with a deep pass from Jared
Goff in tight coverage. “He can make plays,” Goff said. “He’s only been here a week so we’re still getting our rhythm together.”
Smith gets start
Raiders cornerback
Sean Smith started two days after being charged with beating his sister’s boyfriend last month. Prosecutors say Smith beat his sister’s boyfriend and then stomped on the man’s head in Pasadena on July 4. Smith is scheduled to be arraigned next month on assault and battery charges.
“We’ll let him battle legally what issues he has,” coach Jack Del Rio said. “He was defending his sister. Obviously things occurred that were taken issue with so he’s having to defend himself right now.”
