Games to watch this week

Cole Crosswhite and the Kingfisher Yellowjackets host the Marlow Outlaws on Friday in one of the season-opening high school football games to watch.

Two coaching legends square off and the fun begins.

Welcome to Zero Week, the first official week high schools can begin real football games. And even though there’s not a full schedule of games, there remain some strong options to watch across the state.

Here is a look at five games around the state, with all games scheduled for Friday unless noted:

Owasso at Jenks

Longtime Tulsa Union coach Bill Blankenship is back at the high school level coaching Owasso. His first opponent is all too familiar in Jenks and coach Allan Trimble.

The two have faced each other plenty of times over the past two decades. Now, this is a chance for Blankenship to show how much of an improvement the Rams have made under his guidance since the spring. Owasso has Division I talent such as Josh Proctor (Ohio State),Wayne Jones III (Kansas State) and Courté Alexander (undecided).

But Jenks is coming back off a disappointing finish in the postseason with quarterback Ian Corwin read to take the next step.

Tulsa Union at Broken Arrow, 11 a.m. Saturday

How talented is Tulsa Union? The country will find out with this game begin broadcast on ESPN. Union is the heavy favorite to win a second straight Class 6A-I title with a plethora of Division I talent. Broken Arrow is trying to show it’s getting closer to being a power again.

Tulsa Washington at Edmond Santa Fe

Edmond Santa Fe won this matchup on the road last season, and returns with more experience on offense. But still has its hands full with a talented Tulsa Washington team that features junior Dax Hill and senior Rylan McQuarters.

Clinton at Altus

Many expect Clinton to be a title contender in Class 4A under coach Reade Box, and coaches are always wary of Altus in Class 5A. This will be a physical, run-heavy game that should be entertaining.

Marlow at Kingfisher

Two talented Class 3A teams meet looking to prove they’re dangerous early in the season. The Yellowjackets return Cole Crosswhite, a talented running back worth checking out.
