MOORE — The school year began last week across the Moore school district, and the 2017-18 year marks Moore High School's 50th anniversary at 300 N Eastern Ave.

Moore High School Principal Mike Coyle was busy Friday morning greeting and assisting students in the hallways, the south parking lot and in a large room where students lined up for schedules and other paperwork. Coyle has been principal since the 2002-03 school year.

Coyle said the enrollment count was at 2,494 by mid-morning, with some students still in the enrollment process. Because the school year began on Friday, he expected some students wouldn't show up until Monday. And others won't arrive for classes until after Labor Day.

Helping Coyle and his staff this year are members of the FUSE team. That stands for Freshmen Utilizing Seniors' Experience. About 70 FUSE members were assigned to help freshmen and other new students get to their classrooms. Those seniors also will act as mentors to their assigned freshmen during the year.

Because Moore High School has been at its current location for 50 years, Coyle said, there are probably hundreds of secondgeneration students in the student body. He did not have a figure, but he said there are probably many third-generation MHS students.

To mark the school's 50th anniversary, the Moore High School Alumni Association is planning many events during the school year. The Moore War Run 5k is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of E Main and N Eastern.

Alumni from Moore High School and Westmoore High School are working together to raise scholarship funds for Moore's three high schools, which also includes Southmoore, the Moore school district's newest high school. Registration for the event will be at the Moore High School parking lot beginning at 6:30 a.m. More information on the run is available at MooreWarRun.com.
