Scouting Ohio State

Record: 1-0 (1-0 Big Ten)

Best player: J.T. Barrett’s career got off to an early start when he had to step in as a redshirt freshman following Braxton Miller’s season-ending injury just before the start of the 2014 season. He then led the Buckeyes to a 12-0 regular season but suffered an injury that ended his season there. Barrett broke Art Schlichter’s Ohio State record for total offense last week.

The case for the Buckeyes: Oklahoma’s offensive line is one of the best in the nation but they’ll get perhaps their toughest test of the season in Columbus thanks in large part to Ohio State’s two big-time defensive ends—Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis. Barrett and running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber give Ohio State a dangerous ground game that could take advantage of Oklahoma’s inexperience at spots on defense.

The case for the Sooners: Baker Mayfield was excellent in the season opener and if he’s able to settle down in a big game—which has been an issue before—and take what’s given to him, the Sooners should have success offensively. On the defensive side, Oklahoma’s secondary is in a much better position than it was a year ago—even with the injury to Jordan Parker against UTEP.
