Yankees put OF Hicks on DL

The Yankees put outfielder Aaron Hicks on the 10-day disabled list Sunday because of a strained left oblique, less than a month after he missed six weeks because of an injury to his right rib cage.

The move was made before New York’s series finale against AL East-leading Boston. Hicks was hurt Saturday reaching up to make a running catch of Hanley Ramirez’s drive on the center-field warning track and removed from the game. The switch-hitter is batting .265 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs. He was placed on the DL in late June and came back on Aug. 10.

Baez leaves game vs. Braves

The defending champion Chicago Cubs might have to get by without electrifying star Javier Baez after he left their loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday because of blurred vision in his right eye.

Baez took a knee to the eye while diving into second base in the second inning. He departed in the third. He was being examined at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was expected to join the team in Pittsburgh on Monday

Belgium earns World Cup bid

Romelu Lukaku was on target Sunday to give Belgium a 2-1 win over Greece and a place at next year’s World Cup. The Group H fixture was goalless until the 70th minute when Jan Vertonghen blasted the visitors into the lead with a fierce shot. Greece responded three minutes later through Zeca, but only one more minute passed before Belgium retook the lead thanks to Lukaku’s header. It was the Manchester United forward’s 10th goal of the qualifying campaign.
