Pearson sees playmakers all over his defense. They were all needed against Putnam City North on Thursday night. “It doesn’t matter who’s better or by how much in this rivalry,” Pearson said.

“It’s close no matter what, it always is.”

While Pearson said he was happy with his team’s offensive production (137 yards rushing and 234 yards passing), it was his big, strong defensive front that made the difference against North.

Led by defensive ends

Ron Tatum and Collin Clay, Putnam City put the pressure on PC North, ending up with three sacks and three interceptions, including a pick six by senior defensive back Kevonte Lloyd in the third quarter to seal PCO’s 16-10 win.

“We put a lot of pressure on them and came up with some turnovers,” Pearson said. “Really that’s what the game came down to in the end.”

Big drive in 4th quarter seals the deal

Trailing against Marlow midway through the fourth quarter, Bethany head coach Jon Arthur told his boys they needed to make a statement.

They responded with a 6-minute, 80-yard touchdown drive to regain the lead for good before going on to beat Marlow 27-23.

Bethany receiver Ben Lawson caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Sam Brandt, including a 40-yard strike early in the fourth quarter.

“These early tests really give you confidence as the season goes on,” Arthur said. “We really liked the way our kids responded.”

Bethany followed up the big drive by stopping Marlow on a 4th and 1 run play, allowing Bethany to run out the clock.

“We have some things to fix but you can draw a lot of positives from a response like that,” Arthur said. “Plus, everything is easier to fix after a win.”

Carl Albert survives Lawton rally

Holding a 14-point lead midway through the fourth, Class 5A’s defending champion found a way to escape.

Carl Albert survived a furious comeback from Class 6A-II No. 4 Lawton on Thursday for a 33-32 victory after Lawton’s extra-point attempt failed on a bad snap.

The Titans had led 33-19 with 6:07 left behind the dominance of star running back Dadrion Taylor, who rushed for 253 yards and three touchdowns. But Lawton quickly rallied and had a chance to force a possible overtime.

But the snap went over the holder’s head on the extra point, allowing Class 5A’s top team to come away with the win.

Lawton’s Miles Davis rushed for 297 yards and a touchdown. Carl Albert hosts Ada on Friday.

McLoud’s Hall has big night

McLoud quarterback Braxton Hall made the most of his opportunities nearly every time he touched the football.

In McLoud’s 36-14 win over Centennial on Friday, Hall accounted for more than 300 total yards and five touchdowns.

Hall completed 14 of 18 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 98 yards and a touchdown. Along with that, he accounted for two two-point conversions.

McLoud is now 2-0 entering Friday’s matchup with Perkins-Tryon.
