Focus on fall

Oklahoma fashion experts share their favorite trends for autumn.

Friday is the first day of fall, and though temperatures may not warrant sweaters and boots, it seems fitting to focus on fall fashion.

Get ready for a sea of statement-making red or a clean wash of white; menswear touches with a feminine take; floral midcalf dresses; velvet; furry coats; and sweaters in tiny prints or adorned with little ruffles. Oh, but that’s just the start. It’ll be impossible to miss cowboy-inspired looks; ’70s plaid; belted coats; boots, some with shine and glitter, others in bold white; and button details.

Just try picking a favorite. Or two. That’s what we asked a couple of locals in the fashion business.

“There are many trends to pick and choose from this fall season,” said Cindi Shelby, a representative and stylist for Worth New York. “One of the biggest and one of my favorites is the head-to-toe white trend. It’s glamorous and very

sophisticated, plus there’s a shade of white or cream that’s beautiful on everyone. And I love mixing the different shades of bright white, winter white and cream together. So pretty.”

Velvet is poised to be a big trend, too. It started coming on strong last year and has now exploded, Shelby said. Velvet everything — pants, coats, shoes, bags. Literally everything is in the highly desirable texture, she said. “It’s rich and luxurious and actually quite versatile.”

No longer just for evening, it can be worn casually and slouchy. “Wear it anytime you want,” Shelby said. “Another rule out the window!”

Menswear-inspired fashion, often with a feminine feel such as a double-breasted jacket fitted at the waist, is getting plenty of attention too in classic herringbone, pinstripes, plaids and pin checks.

“I love the elegant tailoring and refined style of menswear suiting when it’s designed to hug a woman’s shape. Extremely flattering,” said Shelby, who oversees Worth sales in Oklahoma, Arizona and Nevada.

While fall trends are numerous and tempting, she said these are some of her favorites and she thinks most wearable.

Crystal Bland, owner of locally based miloandlilyboutique.com, said one of her favorite details for fall is the bishop sleeve. A blouse or sweater with a bishop sleeve is fluid and fabulous, a twist on a classic look and never boring, she said.

A bishop sleeve is a long sleeve usually gathered on a cuff or wrist band. Its name comes from a bishop’s robe.

Like Shelby, Bland is excited to see velvet return in a starring role this season. Expect to see a lot of velvet on tops and dresses, she said, including one of her favorites, a peplum top.
