Associate head coach Evans terminated
STILLWATER — Oklahoma State announced Thursday it has officially fired associate head basketball coach Lamont Evans "for cause."
The termination comes a day after Evans made an initial appearance inside an Oklahoma City federal courtroom on a federal bribery complaint.
He is accused of soliciting bribes to steer promising young athletes to specific financial advisers.
Evans surrendered his passport and agreed to have no contact with any of the four co-defendants in his criminal case. Evans was released on a $50,000 own recognizance bond.
Evans is one of four assistant basketball coaches at major universities who were among 10 people charged Tuesday in New York with bribery and other crimes stemming from a wideranging federal investigation into corruption in college basketball.
Auburn's Chuck Person, Arizona's Emanuel Richardson and University of Southern California's Tony Bland were the other coaches. Among the others charged were managers, financial advisers and the director of global sports marketing at Adidas.
According to the Tulsa World, Evans’ salary for the upcoming basketball season was $600,000. Evans signed a threeyear, $1.875-million contract that included a $25,000 raise after each season.
The World reported the university’s obligations for payment cease at the end of the month in which he is fired for just cause. The last day of September is Saturday.
If Evans were fired after Saturday, it would seem OSU could owe him another month’s salary — $50,000.
According to another clause in the contract, Evans might owe the university money. If Evans is terminated for just cause due to governing athletic rules violations, he could owe up to $100,000 in damages.
