Clemson team rushes to student’s aid after car wreck

As the Clemson Tigers were finishing up workouts Tuesday night, a Clemson student had a car wreck near the practice field at approximately 6:20 p.m.

Clemson student athletic trainers, managers and staff provided aid to the student, whose name is Clary Miles, Clemson announced Wednesday afternoon.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was addressing his team when the loud collision occurred on Perimeter Road above the east end of the practice facility. The team was gathered 300 yards from the scene of the accident.

Seconds after the collision, it was apparent that a car was sliding down the side of the steep embankment. Miles fell approximately 100 feet down the hill, coming to rest about 20 feet from the Seneca River that surrounds the Clemson football practice fields.

Clemson players, coaches and personnel rushed to the edge of the river. Sports Medicine Assistant Scott Crowthers, student athletic trainer Bailey Black, student managers Jack Wardlaw and Jack Sari, student coach Daniel Boyd and student videographer Eric Suttles, all swam across the river to reach Miles. Boyd and Suttles are military veterans.

Graduate assistant athletic trainer Rachel Alterio and student athletic trainer Ana Wright also went to the scene to provide help in removing Miles from the car and onto land. The students stayed with Miles until EMS personnel arrived.

NCAA to introduce new transfer rule

An NCAA committee is developing a proposal that would eliminate a school’s ability to essentially block an athlete from transferring.

The NCAA said Wednesday that the Division I Council could introduce legislation to reform transfer rules as early as January.

The NCAA says the most significant change that would be considered this year is taking away from coaches and schools the ability to restrict aid to athletes after transferring.

Currently, scholarship athletes must ask for permission to contact other schools about transferring. Denial means an athlete cannot immediately receive a scholarship from another school.
