Boynton to meet with media on FBI probe

- BY JOHN HELSLEY

STILLWATER – Mike Boynton will speak Thursday. Finally.

More than a week after the stunning revelation that Oklahoma State assistant Lamont Evans was arrested as part of an FBI investigation focused on bribery and corruption in college basketball, Boynton will meet with reporters in in a prepractice media session set for 2:45 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Players will not be available for comment and practices will remain closed at this time.

Boynton will be the last of the four head coaches who had assistants involved in the federal probe to address the situation publicly, although sources have said that he’s been ready and willing to talk, only to have OSU lawyers delay the process.

Boynton, in his first year as coach, has been running practices since Friday, when the Cowboys opened their preseason workouts.

Evans, who was fired last week, is accused of soliciting bribes to steer promising young athletes to specific financial advisers.

During a brief court appearance in Oklahoma City Sept. 27, Evans surrendered his passport and agreed to have no contact with any of the four codefendants in his criminal case. Evans was released on a $50,000 own recognizance bond after waiving his option of having a preliminary hearing in Oklahoma City.

He could still request one in New York, where his next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
