Carwile was surrounded by her teammates after walking off the field down two runs.

Class 3A Purcell had just given up two runs to Verdigris in the top of the seventh inning, and their state softball tournament hopes were on the line as they came up to bat trailing 5-3.

"We seem to kind of like playing from behind," Purcell coach Sarah Jones said. "We turn it on in those moments."

When Carwile stepped up to the plate with two runners on, it was time for one of those moments.

Carwile delivered a deep shot to center to send two runners home and send the game to extra innings tied at 5. Then she went back to work in the circle by striking out one batter, one of six on the day, and getting two more to ground out. After sophomore

Karson Jennings delivered the game winner as she hit the walkoff single that sent Spain home and gave Purcell the win 6-5.

"Just proud of how we stuck in there and kept fighting," Jones said.

"Our team is really young, and it's really those young players making big plays."

Purcell will take on Washington at 11 a.m. Friday at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.

Dale advances after tough win against Howe

Dale coach Andy Powell wasn't sure if it was nerves or maybe star pitcher Delanie Manning didn't properly loosen up, but something seemed off. Dale trailed after the first inning after giving up two runs.

"She kinda left a few over the plate that she normally doesn't do," Powell said. “Thankfully, she got that corrected."

Manning, a junior, would go on to throw six shutout innings and nine strikeouts to put Howe away as Class 2A Dale advanced to the semifinals of The state tournament with a 4-2 win.

"After that first, she was rock solid," Powell said. "She was throwing quite a bit harder at the end. She smelled the win."

Junior Sydney Griggs and senior Mikayla Rutland combined to drive home all four runs for Dale. Dale will take on Drumright at 2 p.m. Friday.

Minco season ends with 5-1 loss to Silo

After giving up three runs in the third inning and two in the fifth to Silo, Minco wasn't able to mount any kind of comeback. The Bulldogs scored one run in the fifth inning, but wasn't able overcome the pitching of Silo freshman Alexis Tanguma, who struck out three and walked just a handful of batters while keeping runners out of scoring position all game. Minco pitcher Carly Herndon also had three strikeouts in the loss.
