COACH ON THE HOT SEAT LSU’s Ed Orgeron
LSU fans were thrilled last season when the school fired Les Miles, named Ed Orgeron interim coach and eventually gave him the job permanently.
Never mind that Miles went 114-34 in 11-½ seasons at LSU, making two national title games and winning one. And never mind that Orgeron was 10-25 as the head coach at Ole Miss, 6-2 as the interim coach at Southern Cal in 2013 and 6-2 as the interim coach at LSU last season.
Orgeron was a Cajun, a native Louisianian, and that’s what LSU fans craved. Now they crave another coach.
Five games into the official Orgeron era, the Tigers 3-2 and coming off a 24-21 home loss to Troy. You know you’re on the hot seat when fans already want to know the buyout on a coach’s contract.
Orgeron’s is $12 million, if he’s fired before next season, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate. Of course, LSU also owes Miles $9, so if the Tigers want to make a coaching change, it’s a cool $21 million commitment, plus whatever they pay the new guy.
Orgeron’s buyout goes down — $8.5 million after the 2018 season, $6 million after the 2019 season, $4.5 million after the 2020 season and $1 million after the 2021 season.
Saturday, the Tigers play at Florida. A loss would drop LSU to 3-3, with games against Auburn and Alabama remaining, plus tossup games with Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas A&M. If LSU makes a change, there’s one way to save money. Hire back Les Miles.
