Storybook Forest canceled this season

Arcadia Lake’s annual Storybook Forest, originally scheduled for Oct. 23-30, has been postponed for the 2017 season. The event is expected to return in 2018

The postponeme­nt is necessary because of the timing of staff changes and software upgrades that have taken place at the lake.

“We understand and share in the disappoint­ment of not being able to hold this fun event for 2017,” lake administra­tive supervisor Nicole Offutt said. “Our intent is to make much needed changes and improvemen­ts during this time, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2018.”

As an alternativ­e, residents may consider attending the third annual Trunk or Treat event hosted by the Edmond Parks & Recreation Department. The free event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Mitch Park. Candy will be handed out from decorated vehicles by University of Central Oklahoma student groups, local businesses and city of Edmond department­s.

Shelter holds low-cost vaccinatio­n clinic

EDMOND — A low-cost vaccinatio­n and microchip clinic will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Edmond Animal Welfare Shelter, 2424 Old Timbers Road.

The event will benefit Paws for Life, a nonprofit that treats many of the Edmond shelter’s medical needs.

UCO institute wins Global Citizen award

The Multicultu­ral Education Institute at the University of Central Oklahoma was among the winners announced at the recent Global Citizen 2017 Awards Gala.

The event was hosted by the World Experience­s Foundation, which Central alumnus Akash Patel founded to promote global education and multicultu­ral resources worldwide.

The institute was named the 2017 Global Citizen in Education for its work with Oklahoma educators and its efforts to improve education in diverse communitie­s.

Beer run to benefit Edmond Fine Arts

EDMOND — The OK Ale Trail 5K Beer Run benefiting the Edmond Fine Arts Institute will be Oct. 21.

The fundraisin­g race for craft beer enthusiast­s will begin at 1 p.m. in front of The Patriarch, 9 E Edwards.

Three local Oklahoma breweries will provide specialty beverages crafted for the OK Ale Trail. The Edmond “Lager Joggers” will be treated to a beer from Coop Ale Works, Anthem Brewing and Roughtail Brewing between laps and pick their favorite at the end of the race.

In addition to compliment­ary craft beers (for runners 21 and older), food trucks, live bands, and activities for children will be on site for runners, families and spectators to enjoy. All ages are invited to run.

Del City to host safety fair, open house

The Del City Fire Department will have its annual Public Safety Fair and Fire Department Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to kick off National Fire Prevention Week.

The event will be at Fire Station 1, 4501 SE 15, and include first-responder vehicles from across the metro area, static displays, a medical helicopter, food trucks and more.

End-of-life planning seminar set

The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department will present “Embrace the Journey,” an end-of-life resource event on Oct. 19.

The seminar will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the Oklahoma City-County Health Department, 2600 NE 63, and will feature profession­als speaking about end-of-life decisions.

Topics will include legal decisions, creative legacies, new options in funeral arrangemen­ts, how to start difficult conversati­ons, making final wishes clear and what a chaplain hears in final conversati­ons. Community-based organizati­ons also will be on hand with informatio­n and services.

The event is free, and snacks will be provided.
