Edmond residents are offered free trees

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

EDMOND — Beginning Monday, Edmond residents can register for an opportunity to receive a free tree.

Edmond Electric and The Arbor Day Foundation are teaming up again for the Energy-Saving Trees Program.

The program offers free trees, along with an easy-touse online mapping tool to take the guesswork out of tree planting. By entering simple information about a home and yard, the tool calculates where to strategically plant trees for the greatest energyand money-saving benefits.

“Edmond Electric recognizes the importance of trees for health and quality of life, and they can also help lower energy costs,” Energy Services Manager Michelle Gumaer said. “Planting the right tree in the right place will not only lower energy costs, but will provide comfort for families for years to come.”

There will be 125 trees available to Edmond Electric customers only. Residents will be able to reserve a free tree at www.arborday.org/edmondelectric. Available species include redbud, pink velour crape myrtle, black gum, sawtooth oak and swamp white oak. (One tree per customer/ household)

Trees will be available for pickup at Mitch Park from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 13 or 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 14. Residents who took advantage of this program in April 2017 will need to wait at least one distribution before reserving another tree.

To date, Edmond Electric has given out 481 free trees to residents.
