Swinney expects injured QB Bryant to practice this week

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney expects injured quarterback Kelly Bryant to practice later in the week to try and prepare to face Syracuse on Friday night.

Swinney said Bryant would be limited Sunday night when the second-ranked Tigers start preparations for the Orange. He said if all remains well, Bryant should be able to work out in the next couple of days for Clemson (6-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Bryant was hurt in the third quarter of Clemson’s 28-14 win over Wake Forest on Saturday. He tried to jog on the ankle but was in pain. Bryant wore a black, walking boot around his foot and ankle when he spoke to the media after the game. Bryant said he’d spend much of the week going through treatment to get ready.

Miami RB Mark Walton needs season-ending surgery

Miami running back Mark Walton will need seasonending surgery on his right ankle, a major blow for the 11th-ranked and unbeaten Hurricanes.

Walton was injured in Miami’s win over Florida State on Saturday, and surgery is expected to be scheduled later this week.

Miami has not specified the extent of Walton’s injury. Coach Mark Richt says it is clear that the surgery will end Walton’s season, which also raises the possibility that he may have played his last college game. Walton has been considered to be an early entry NFL Draft candidate in 2018.

Walton was Miami’s leading rusher, with 428 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Jerry Jones: NFL can’t tolerate players disrespecting flag

Dallas owner Jerry Jones says the NFL can’t leave the impression that it tolerates players disrespecting the flag and that any of his Cowboys making such displays won’t play.

Jones had his strongest comments so far on the anthem controversy Sunday night. They started with his response to a question about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the game in Indianapolis after about a dozen San Francisco players knelt during the anthem.

Jones said after the Cowboys’ 35-31 loss to Green Bay that the league can’t “in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag.”

Of his own players, the Hall of Famer said, “If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period.”

The Cowboys knelt arm-in-arm before the national anthem when they played at Arizona two weeks ago. Players, coaches and others, including Jones and his family, were among those in the line. All of them stood during the anthem, with arms still locked.
